Introduction of the Midland Merit Table in 1972/73, which consisted of 9 Clubs Bedford, Birmingham, Coventry, Leicester, Moseley, Northampton, Nottingham Nuneaton and Rugby, resulted in the top 5 teams automatically qualifying for the following seasons National Cup with the bottom 4 having to qualify through a knock-out competition which required 3 wins from 3 matches for qualification.
